Frequently Asked Questions

What is the GST rate in Australia?
The Australian GST rate is 10%, applied to most goods and services. Some items are GST-free, including basic food, health services, and education.
How do I calculate GST from a total amount?
To find the GST in a GST-inclusive price, divide the total by 11. For example, if the total is $110, the GST is $110 ÷ 11 = $10. The price before GST is $100.
Do I need to register for GST?
You must register for GST if your business has a GST turnover of $75,000 or more per year ($150,000 for non-profit organisations). Registration is optional below these thresholds.

What is GST?

The Goods and Services Tax (GST) is a 10% value-added tax on most goods and services sold in Australia. It was introduced on 1 July 2000 and is administered by the ATO.

How this calculator works

To add GST, multiply the amount by 1.1. To remove GST from an inclusive price, divide by 11 to find the GST component, or divide by 1.1 to find the price before GST. This calculator handles both directions instantly. The invoice summary section formats the breakdown for business accounting — you can copy the result directly into your invoices or BAS records.

GST-Free Items

Not everything in Australia attracts GST. The following categories are GST-free: fresh food (fruit, vegetables, meat, bread, milk), most healthcare services and medical aids, education courses (tuition fees, course materials), childcare, exports of goods and services, water and sewerage charges, and some religious and charitable activities.

How to Calculate GST for Invoicing

If you are registered for GST, your tax invoices must show the GST amount separately. To calculate the GST component of a GST-inclusive price, divide by 11. For example, a $110 invoice includes $10 GST and $100 ex-GST. To add GST to an ex-GST amount, multiply by 0.1 to find the GST, or multiply the whole amount by 1.1 to get the inclusive price.

BAS Reporting Basics

Businesses registered for GST must lodge a Business Activity Statement (BAS) — usually quarterly. On your BAS you report GST collected on sales (1A) and GST paid on purchases (1B). The difference is what you owe to or are owed by the ATO. Keep tax invoices for all purchases over $82.50 (including GST) to claim input tax credits.

GST Registration Threshold

You must register for GST if your business has a GST turnover of $75,000 or more per year ($150,000 for non-profit organisations). Even if your turnover is below the threshold, you can choose to register voluntarily — this lets you claim GST credits on business purchases. Taxi drivers and ride-share operators must register regardless of turnover.

Worked Examples

Add GST to a $500 consulting service

Total invoice: $550.00 (GST: $50.00)

  1. Start with the ex-GST price: $500.00
  2. Calculate the GST component: $500.00 x 10% = $50.00
  3. Add GST to the base price: $500.00 + $50.00 = $550.00
  4. Your tax invoice shows: Subtotal $500.00, GST $50.00, Total $550.00

Remove GST from a $1,100 GST-inclusive invoice

Ex-GST price: $1,000.00 (GST component: $100.00)

  1. Start with the GST-inclusive price: $1,100.00
  2. Divide by 11 to find the GST component: $1,100.00 / 11 = $100.00
  3. Subtract GST from the total: $1,100.00 - $100.00 = $1,000.00
  4. Alternatively, divide by 1.1: $1,100.00 / 1.1 = $1,000.00
