About Tax Calculators

Our tax calculators are based on the latest rates published by the Australian Taxation Office (ATO) for the 2026-27 financial year (1 July 2026 to 30 June 2027). The income tax brackets for residents are: $0-$18,200 (nil), $18,201-$45,000 (15%, cut from 16% on 1 July 2026), $45,001-$135,000 (30%), $135,001-$190,000 (37%), and $190,001+ (45%). The Medicare levy is 2% of taxable income, with a low-income exemption below $28,011 (2025-26 threshold).

Australia uses a progressive tax system — you only pay the higher rate on income above each threshold, not your entire income. The Low Income Tax Offset (LITO) provides up to $700 for earners under $66,667. HECS-HELP student loan repayments use a marginal bracket system, starting at $69,528 for 2026-27.

The GST rate is 10% on most goods and services. Businesses with turnover above $75,000 must register for GST and lodge quarterly BAS returns. Capital gains are taxed at your marginal rate, with a 50% discount for assets held over 12 months. All data sourced from ato.gov.au.
