Frequently Asked Questions

Can I pay rego monthly in Australia?
Most states offer quarterly (3-month) or half-yearly (6-month) registration options alongside annual. NSW also offers monthly CTP payments through some insurers. Paying for shorter periods costs slightly more per month but reduces the upfront cost.
What happens if I drive with expired rego?
Driving an unregistered vehicle is illegal in all Australian states and carries heavy fines ($600-$2,000+). More importantly, your CTP insurance is void, meaning you are personally liable for any injuries caused in an accident — a potentially devastating financial exposure.

What is QLD Rego Cost?

Vehicle registration (rego) costs in Australia include the registration fee, Compulsory Third Party (CTP) insurance, motor vehicle tax, and other government fees. Costs vary significantly between states and vehicle types.

How this calculator works

Select your state and vehicle type to see the estimated annual registration cost. The calculator includes the main components: registration fee, CTP/Green Slip insurance, stamp duty on transfer, and administration fees. The state comparison shows all 8 states/territories sorted by cost, so you can see the range. Electric vehicles often qualify for reduced registration in several states as part of EV incentive programs. Note: actual costs vary based on your vehicle's age, weight, engine size, and your specific CTP insurer.

What Rego Actually Costs

Annual rego varies hugely: NT cheapest at $480-$640, VIC similar $750-$850 incl TAC, NSW $850-$1,100 including CTP Green Slip, QLD $700-$900 (cheap CTP), WA $700-$900, SA $700-$850. Components: registration fee (state transport authority), CTP/Green Slip (third-party injury insurance — separate insurer in NSW, included in TAC for VIC), motor vehicle tax (some states), inspection levy, plate fee.

CTP / Green Slip Specifics

NSW: choose from 6 CTP insurers (NRMA, Allianz, AAMI, Suncorp, GIO, QBE). Compare via SIRA website. Premium varies by vehicle, driver age, postcode, claims history. VIC: TAC bundled into rego — no choice. QLD: choose from 4 insurers (cheap due to high competition + no-fault scheme). SA: CTP from MAIC. WA: bundled with rego. Save $100-$300 by comparing CTP insurers in choice states.

EV Incentives by State

ACT: FREE rego for zero-emission vehicles (2022-2024 purchases). NSW: $3,000 rebate for first 25,000 EVs (closed) + 3 years free rego. VIC: $100/yr EV rego discount. TAS: 2 years free rego for EVs. QLD: 50% rego discount, $6,000 rebate for first 15,000 EVs. WA: $3,500 rebate. NT: no specific EV concessions. Always check current state schemes — they change yearly.

Renewals and Transfers

Most states offer 6-month or 12-month renewals; 12-month is usually cheaper per month. Some states (VIC, NSW) offer concessions for pensioners (50%) and low-income card holders. TRANSFER stamp duty applies when buying a used car: NSW 3% of value, VIC 4.2% non-luxury / 5.2% luxury, QLD up to $2/$100, etc. Sellers/buyers must transfer rego within 14 days.

Heavy Vehicles and Trailers

Trailers and caravans need separate rego (cheap — $50-$200/yr). Trucks over 4.5t GVM: significantly higher rego (especially heavy combinations 25t+ which can be $5,000+/yr). Motorcycles: typically $400-$700 rego depending on state. Vintage/classic vehicles: most states offer discounted concessional rego if used <90 days/yr (often $50-$200/yr).

Tax Deductibility

If you use your car for work (logbook method), the work-use % of rego is tax-deductible. Cents-per-km method already includes all costs including rego — can't separately claim. For sole traders, motor vehicle rego on company-owned vehicles is fully deductible against business income. Salary-sacrificed novated leases include rego in the pre-tax bundle.
