About Business Calculators

Payroll tax is levied by state governments on employer wage bills above a threshold. Thresholds range from $900,000 (VIC) to $2,000,000 (ACT), with rates from 4% (TAS) to 6.85% (ACT). The cheapest state depends on your total wages — high-threshold states suit smaller payrolls.

Businesses with turnover above $75,000 ($150,000 for non-profits) must register for GST and lodge Business Activity Statements (BAS) — typically quarterly. BAS reports GST collected on sales, GST paid on purchases, and PAYG withholding and instalments. Late lodgement incurs penalties of $313 per 28-day period.

An ABN (Australian Business Number) is required to issue tax invoices, claim GST credits, and avoid 47% no-ABN withholding. Check ABN status at abr.business.gov.au before paying invoices.
